Berne joins BIOGASMAX
The biogas experiment in progress in Berne is an example of territorial governorship with concrete results. The city of Berne puts together three partners coming from different sectors of activity and wotking in interactivity: -EWB (Energie Wasse Bern), a local supplier of water, electricity and gas. -ARA (Arabern), a local wastewater plant -BERNMOBIL, the Public Transportation company of the City
Interactivity examples : The wastewater plant produces more than 1 billion of m3 of refined biogas coming from wastewater and biological food waste. More than 30 buses are fueled with the BERNMOBIL production. BERNMOBIL plans to replace 75 of these diesel-fueled buses by gas-fueled buses within 3-4 years. EWB builds the upgrading process of biogas dedicated to the wastewater treatment plant and deals with the injection point of the natural grid. Furthermore, this local energy supplier buids and brings into service fueling stations for the account of BERNMOBIL (2 rapid ones and 70 slow ones) and 7 fueling stations dedicated to indidual use in the Berne area.
Operation 70 slow fueling stations: The gas-fueled buses are coming back late on evening. They are immediately lead to the terminal and connected to their slow-fuelling station (1 per bus). The fueling takes a little more than 3 hours, letting the buses ready-to-go the morning after. 2 rapid fueling stations are used only in case of emergency (3 to 5 min. to fuel the bus). 7 fueling stations for individual use : 5 are yet in operation, 2 will be put in activity at the end of 2007.They are geographically concentrated in the Berne area and are connected to the natural gas network.
Biogas supply It is expected that at least 10% of the fuel-gas bought will be biomethane. EWB supply come from Zurich and Lucerne in order to comply with these constraints.
